Wild Plants
Dandelion, Plantago (Broadleaf Plantain), Kuzu leaves, Biwako leaves, Mulberry leaves, and Persimmon leaves are examples of wild plants suitable for chinchillas.
Key Points for Feeding Wild Plants, Dried Vegetables, and Dried Fruits
It’s essential to distinguish between what can be fed to chinchillas as a regular diet versus what qualifies as treats.
Dandelions
Wild plants not cultivated in a controlled environment, such as those grown outdoors, can be contaminated with animal waste, fertilizers, or insects. Therefore, it is best to provide only those wild plants specifically sold for small animals. Even small amounts of contaminated food can be fatal to chinchillas.
Chinchillas can also consume small amounts of parsley, bok choy, and shiso leaves. However, since chinchillas did not have a natural habit of consuming high-moisture foods in the wild, they generally do not prefer these items. It’s advisable to offer dry forms of such plants instead.
Dried Vegetables
Chinchillas can enjoy dried vegetables like cabbage and carrots, but caution is necessary as overconsumption can lead to digestive issues.
Toxic Plants
Certain plants can be toxic to chinchillas, including morning glory, daffodil, hydrangea, ficus, lily of the valley, and hyacinth. Care should be taken to avoid these plants entirely.
